Wrap of Bendigo footy, round three…
South Bendigo opened its 2018 winning account with a 43-point win over Maryborough at Princes Park on Saturday. The winless Magpies stretched South all the way closing the gap to just 13 points seven minutes out from half-time. But the Bloods added seven goals to three after half-time to eventually win by 43 points. In other games Sandhurst restricted Kangaroo Flat to a single goal for four quarters of work at the night QEO match while Golden Square held Castlemaine to just two majors under lights at the Camp Reserve. Eaglehawk rebounded from an ordinary opening three quarters with a nine-goal last quarter burst against Gisborne while in the league’s third night game Strathfieldsaye overcame Kyneton’s daunting home ground advantage to register a 17-point victory. Bendigo footy wrap
SANDHURST regained the Graeme Wright Memorial Cup by downing old rivals South Bendigo by 27 points at the QEO on Saturday. The Dragons turned a 20-point deficit early in the third quarter into close to a five-goal win with a blitz of nine unanswered majors. The Bloods, though, had led by 14 points at the long break and then booted the first goal of the third term through Brayden Torpey to stretch the lead out to 20 points. But then the Hurst midfield got on top in the centre and around the stoppages as the Dragons clicked into gear. In other games Kyneton landed a massive 13 goals in the third term to savage Kangaroo Flat on the Roos’ home deck while Eaglehawk held Castlemaine to just two goals as they landed an astonishing 36 in reply. Reigning premiers Strathfieldsaye opened their 2018 account with an eight-goal win over Gisborne in the twilight game and Golden Square made it two wins from two outings with a 118-point belting of Maryborough. Confidence is a useful commodity in footy. During the third quarter at Claremont on Saturday young Tiger Oliver Eastland was preparing for a shot at goal from 50 metres near the boundary. Experienced defender Keifer Yu cruised past took the handball missed with a flying shot and copped plenty from Sharks fans and players for his audacity. Continue reading
Fremantle’s away game against Gold Coast started half an hour after three of the WAFL games last Saturday. Luckily the match-of-the-round at Fremantle Oval was a late starter so getting to almost one and a half live games was possible. Continue reading
It’s a WAFL mystery. Peel, aligned with Fremantle, have won the past two premierships and few teams have looked so impressive during a pre-season. Meanwhile, East Perth, aligned to a better performing AFL club, didn’t make the finals last year and have started the new season looking hopeless. Continue reading
