Korean writer-director Lee Chang-dong seems to be very keen on themes of class division and resentment. He’s noted for his works on these topics, particularly in his published works as he follows would-be writers on their quests for publication. A look at Oscar Wilde’s last years in The Happy Prince (MA15+)
I daresay it’s a tad gruesome to watch a movie depicting terrorists slaughtering hotel guests a mere 24 hours after the horrific shootings in Christchurch. But that’s what we did on the weekend as we took in the movie about the attacks in Mumbai towards the end of November 2008.
I didn’t know until this week that Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy reprised their comedy act after World War 2. In 1953, in fact, when they toured England and Ireland. I knew only of their black and white comic movie romps from the 1930s and they presumably kicked off even earlier – in the Twenties.
I don’t think I’ve ever sat through a movie which boasts 10 Academy Award nominations. But director Yorgos Lanthimos has produced a masterpiece where the nominations cover just about every possible category.
Hands up if you knew that a special guidebook known colloquially as the Green Book was written in 1936.
