• AFL half-time entertainment at Perth Stadium 2021.
I’ve been to a few AFL Grand Finals.
There must have been pre-game or half-time entertainment at all of them. No Googling allowed, let’s see what I remember, apart from Mike Brady of course.
1988: Hawthorn thrashed Melbourne. I think there was a bloke of a horse and he might have sung Waltzing Matilda.
2007: Geelong thrashed Port Adelaide beating the record winning margin set by Hawthorn in 1988. Sorry, nothing comes to mind.
2010: The draw between Collingwood and St Kilda. Don’t remember but I did go to the toilet at half time.
2011: Geelong beat Collingwood. Not sure.
2013: No memories at all.
2021: Melbourne beat Western Bulldogs at Perth Stadium. Yeah, I remember Baker Boy and Eskimo Joe and being impressed by how they moved from one act to the next. There were others, maybe John Butler.
I love footy and I love music and there’s not doubt footy and the arts should mix. This year the AFL is paying American rapper Snoop Dogg a lot of money (some reckon $5million) to do a few songs at half-time at the Grand Final.
There are many fine Australian musicians capable of putting on a memorable performance at the AFL Grand final. It would be easy to use the big game to promote Australian music and have money left over to help footy clubs all around the nation.
Too late to change anything now but I hope Mr Dogg includes Pay Ya Dues in his GF setlist and AFL Commissioners and the CEO all sing along. Google the lyrics.
Bring back the sheep-dog trials.
