Sharks turfed out of top spot

WAFL round 14

If you see any “genuine WACA turf” up for sale on eBay the chances are 1. it’s real and 2. it’s been put up by South Fremantle midfielders Haiden Schloithe (1) or Jarrod Doney (5). It was wet at the WACA for the derby and midfielders got a taste of what footy used to be like. For the Sharks it was like the derby has been for years now with the Bulldogs notching their 14th win in a row over their cross-town rivals. It was over pretty quickly too with East Fremantle scoreless in the first quarter and South kicking the first five goals of the game. Schloithe was brilliant, Doney dogged, Dylan Main kicked four goals and Toby McQuilkan again showed great judgment in defence. Kyle Baskerville battled in out for the Sharks and Alex Montauban scored three goals from very limited opportunities (four kicks).

Swan Districts scored an important win over East Perth at Bassendean putting a potential finalist at arm’s length. Defenders Brandon Erceg and Tony Notte helped nullify the Royals while Jesse Palmer put in another big game.

West Perth returned to the top of the ladder with an east win at Lathlain Park in the late game. The Eagles have had habit of not scoring a goal in the last quarter of games this season – on Saturday there were no goals in the first, second and third – and then four in the last. Progress? Conal Lynch kicked four goals for the Falcons.

Darcy Tucker and Mitch Crowden were the stars for Peel in a comfortable win over Perth, also at Lathlain. I wonder if anyone stayed for both games?

Leederville Oval showcased its terrible wet weather surface as Claremont and Subiaco slopped around and scored nine goals between them.

Swans continue to perform like a finals team but their place is still not secure.

South Fremantle 9.13 (67) East Fremantle 5.4 (34)

Swan Districts 10.7 (67) East Perth 6.8 (44)

Peel 11.13 (79) Perth 7.7 (49)

Claremont 5.5 (35) Subiaco 4.4 (28)

West Perth 12.118 (90) West Coast 4.9 (36)

Ladder: West Perth 40; East Fremantle 36; South Fremantle 36; Claremont 36; Swan Districts 32; Peel 28; East Perth 24; Subiaco 16; Perth 8; West Coast 4.

Round 15: East Fremantle vs Perth; East Perth vs Peel; Claremont vs Swan Districts; South Fremantle vs West Perth.
