Bendigo Football League round two

KANGAROO Flat produced a real upset in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League’s round two with an all-the-way, 61-point drubbing of the fancied Maryborough at Beck Legal Oval on Saturday.
Led by key on-baller Mitchell Hough and big man Hamish Dahl, the Roos booted 12 goals to five after the long break, following a reasonably even first half.
They were too quick, too committed and too determined to taste victory for the lead-footed Magpies.
Flat’s on-field leaders Tyson Mihocek and playing coach Tyrone Downie booted four goals each. For the Magpies, Cameron Rinaldi was their only effective forward, nailing five majors in their meagre tally of 10.
Final scores: Kangaroo Flat 19.20 (134) d. Maryborough 10.13 (73).
Jack Bowyer lined up on Maryborough’s dangerous forward Ben Jackson – eight goals in round one – and completely shut him down.
Jackson did not kick a goal on the day. In fact, it took 15 minutes of the first term before veteran Martin Dell kicked the Magpies’ first goal.
But with Downie landing two, the Roos led by nine points at quarter-time.
Rinaldi slammed home a pair of booming, second term shots from wide out on the flank beside the George Edwards Stand for Maryborough.
But important second quarter majors to Hamish Dahl, close to red time, and a clever 30-metre snap from Hough handed the Flat a 10-point half-time lead.
That was the end of the match as a real contest. The Roos added 6.8 to 1.1 in the third term.
Goals to Nick Lang, Marty Kelly and Mihocek (2) extended Kangaroo Flat’s lead and when Downie dribbled through a long, rolling shot the Roos grabbed a 47-point advantage by the last change.
The Magpies’ only counter to the pace of Hough, Mitchell Collins, Marty Kelly and Aaron Walklate came from winger Luke Bucknall and teenager Liam Cunningham.
The Roos consistently broke into open spaces, bursting clear of frantic, chasing Magpies.
Six more majors in the closing quarter stitched up a deserved four, premiership points for the Roos.
Rinaldi was able to take his tally to five for the Pies with three goals in the last term.
Devastated Maryborough coach Matt Aston said his players had turned up with the “completely wrong mind-set.”
“Their midfield just blew us out of the water. We might have been good against Castlemaine the week before, but it looked like a few of our blokes might be getting ahead of themselves.”
And Aston said Maryborough’s first 20 minutes after half-time had been “a disgrace.”
Roos’ coach Tyrone Downie said his defenders had performed solidly. “I’m confident in our back six even though there had been a fair bit of talk about Maryborough’s big talls and that they were going to expose us.
“ We’ve got some pretty decent backline players, too, who are probably under-rated a little bit,” he said.
