Royals break the ice
ROUND four of the WAFL season started on Maundy Thursday when East Perth controlled things all night against Perth and won by 27 points. The Royals could easily have been 3-0 for the season but must settle for a 1-2 start. Josh Smith, who is proving hard to handle. kicked six goals for East Perth, Kyle Anderson was good in defence, Hayden Crozier again show class and Nick Krommer, who enjoys a challenge, made things difficult for Leon Davis and Paul Bevan. Ben Noakes played well for Perth against his old team and Fraser McInnes kicked two goals and looked impressive.
East Perth 14.11 (95) Perth 10.8 (68).
In the Saturday game East Fremantle held off a spirited Peel and gave notice that they are the big improvers in 2012. Brock O'Brien was everywhere and booted four goals, Sam Menegola impressed in a variety of roles, Jacob Brennan was enterprising in defence and Mark McGough again showed he knows how to get the ball. Pat Travers worked hard in the midfield for Thunder, Matt Battye provided a target and kicked four goals, Anthony Morabito made a slick return to senior football and Lee Spurr's kicking was a highlight of the game.
East Fremantle 14.21 (105) Peel 12.13 (85).
There were two Monday games. It was over a quarter time at Claremont Oval with the home team leading 5.5 to nothing. Ian Richardson kicked four goals for the Tigers and gun midfielders Luke Blackwell, Kane Mitchell and Byron Schammer were outstanding. Joel Rice worked hard for the Falcons who have had an unimpressive start to the year.
Claremont 15.13 (103) West Perth 9.4 (58).
At Bassendean Swan Districts' inaccuracy kept South Fremantle in the game for most of the afternoon but the impressive Swans did enough to win. Midfielders Josh Roberts and Shaun Hilderbrandt were the prime movers for the home team. Paul Mugambwa kicked five goals for the Bulldogs and Kris Miller was busy.
Swan Districts 17.21 (122) South Fremantle 15.9 (99).
