Aireys vs Macedon...
AIREYS INLET has reclaimed the Ashes after a rare win over Macedon in the 29th annual cricket game between the two bushfire towns.
Aireys Inlet, on Victoria's west coast, and Macedon, just an hour north of Melbourne, were both ravaged by the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 16 February 1983. The fires killed 75 people across Victoria and South Australia.
“This win was long overdue,” said Aireys Inlet skipper and wicketkeeper Brett Venables, a son of one of the game’s founders, the late Ray Venables.
“It’s more the spirit of the game that really matters in a match like this, but it’s still good to have a win.” It was Aireys Inlet’s first Ashes victory since 2004.
Batting first in the 30-over-a-side game, Aireys Inlet made 154. Macedon started brightly but were skittled for 113.
