A year of quality not quantity...
I CONFESS to spending less time in cinemas in 2011 than any year of the past decade. I might have missed some classics but I know I saw five crackers.
1. Another Year. Mike Leigh’s take on the everyday was slow and sharp and sad. A reminder that things aren’t always as they appear.
2. True Grit. The Coen Brothers western was just about perfect.
3. Midnight in Paris. A trifecta of great filmmakers with Woody Allen again hitting the mark.
4. Mad Bastards. Closer to home and close to the bone. Great music from the Pigram Brothers and Alex Lloyd capped this tough story.
5. Murundak. I had tears running down my cheeks for much of this musical journey.
A special mention to My Afternoons with Margueritte.
