Clooney for president

January 15, 2012
By Richard Jones

A look at The Ides Of March (M)...

OHIO state governor Mike Morris is running for the American presidency as the Democratic party's representative.
With the state presidential primaries looming, Morris (George Clooney) has top notch back office staff. His campaign boss Paul Zara (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and junior campaign manager Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling) run the show and they have to use every trick in the book.
That's because Morris' opponent in the primary is the formidable Senator Pullman. And his campaign director (Paul Giamatti) is not averse to some sleazy skulduggery of his own.
It's when pretty intern (Evan Rachel Wood) insinuates her way into Meyers' life that things start to unravel.
The young junior manager has to juggle his love life and the day-to-day problems in the Governor's office.
Prime among these is Morris' refusal to endorse as a potential running mate – in reality his vice-presidential choice – a man who holds a sizeable number of state votes.
The Senator Pullman team is also courting the same person. Given that their prey has a terrible voting record, it's anyone's guess who he'll finally plump for.
Cagey New York Times reporter Ida Horowicz (Marisa Tomei) alerts Meyers to some of these under-currents while desperately seeking out any leaks from the Mike Morris front office.
