The editor's choice...
1. Dolly Parton at the Burswood Dome. Everything was against this. A horrible venue. A gaggle of singalong girls sitting behind me (I wanted to shout out, “sing something they don’t know!”). But Dolly was magnificent – there’s real warmth in her live show to go with the voice and the red hot band.
2. Bob Dylan at Fremantle Park (West Coast Blues ‘n Roots Festival). Some people hated this performance. Maybe it was having Dylan play over the road from my place that swayed me... I liked it and thought he looked great too.
3. Gurrumul at Fremantle Park. Something special.
4. Mavis Staples at Fremantle Park.
5. Mark Lanagan & Isobel Campbell at The Fly By Night, Fremantle.
6. Frank Yamma at Mojo’s North Fremantle. An intimate little show. Yamma’s song She Cried just about takes the cake for me for 2011.
Special mentions: Archie Roach (always a pleasure) and Martha Wainwright (just a bit too much Piaf and nit enough McGarrigle for me) both at Becks Music Bowl but not at the same time. Manganiyar Seduction at the Perth Concert Hall... sights and sounds to behold.
