Two more close WAFL games
Wins in round one of the WAFL for the Bulldogs, Lions, Sharks and Falcons...
THE excellent start to the WAFL season continued with the Saturday afternoon games resulting in close wins to home teams East Fremantle and West Perth.
The Sharks beat Peel by eight points after trailing at each break.
Brad Shepherd and Conor Davidson impressed on debut for East Fremantle; Anthony Kyanga's pace in attack was important and he kicked three goals; Leith Teakle and Andrew McGarry also kicked three goals and captain Kasey Green had a solid game.
Bradley Holmes, who kicked three goals, was lively in the forward line for Peel; Simon Rosa was good in defence; Eaglehawk recruit Kain Robins scored three goals and Mathew Brown did some nice work in the forward line.
Final score: East Fremantle 15.7 (97) Peel 14.5 (89).
At Joondalup West Perth looked in control for most of the game but after getting out to a 24-point lead in the third quarter had to work hard to hold out East Perth. Brent Lecras scored five goals and had good support in attack from Anthony Tsalikis and Jason Saleic. Marc Crisp's long kicking was important and Anton Saylor was good on debut.
Trevor Oliver ran the ball from defence well for the Royals, Brent Cowell was tireless in the midfield and youngsters Mitchell Duncan, on debut, and Mark Hutchings looked good.
Final score: West Perth 16.7 (103) East Perth 14.9 (96).
Friday night: South Fremantle 15.14 (104) Swan Districts 13.9 (87); Subiaco 10.21 (81) Claremont 10.6 (66).
Next week: East Perth vs East Fremantle (Friday night); West Perth vs South Fremantle; Peel vs Perth; Swan Districts vs Subiaco.
