NAB Cup quarter final: Magpies

February 28, 2009
By Les Everett

Why so serious?

The game: It was a Thursday night game. It marked the return of Ben Cousins. It was live on TV. So this was a big game with about 37,000 turning up at Telstra Dome. A feature of the game was the number of players from both teams who had to prop and wait while streaming forward because they were heading towards an empty forward line. Collingwood ran away with it in the last quarter to win by 46 points.
The positives: Travis Cloke marked well but his kicking can be a worry. Gold Coast youngster Dayne Beams looked good, Nathan Brown did some nice things in attack and there was often a good flow to the run of the Magpies.
The negatives: Mick Malthouse has never taken preseason competitions seriously. This year his team is up and running and looks to be out to win the whole thing. Is he worried about something?
