THE task for teams five to eight on the WAFL ladder entering round 15 was simple – beat teams one to four. In the Saturday games it happened but, while Perth gave East Fremantle a scare, the Sunday games consolidated top four spots.

At Leederville Subiaco were the outsiders in the battle of the co-tenants but won it easily after taking control in the second quarter. The key to the victory for the Lions was their defence where Jack Anthony, Darren Rumble and Antoni Grover were outstanding. Des Headland was powerful in the forward line and kicked three goals along with talented youngster George Hampson while Rob Forrest had another great game in the midfield. Freddie Clutterbuck and Craig Wulff won enough of the ball in the midfield but couldn't get past that Subi backline while Mathew Seal kicked three goals and did some good work all around the ground.

Subiaco 12.16 (88) East Perth 7.9 (51)

At Bassendean the home side might be thinking about their kicking for goal after going down by eight points to West Perth. Shane Nelson maintained his outstanding form for the Falcons, Andrew Strijk kicked three vital goals and Mark Hutchings was again in fine form. Ashley Hansen kicked five goals for Swans.

West Perth 11.13 (79) Swan Districts 9.17 (71)

At East Fremantle Oval the home team seemed to have put the game to bed early in the third quarter when they led by five goals. A spirited fightback dragged Perth into the lead early in the last but the Sharks steadied and moved into third place on the ladder in the process. It was a breakout game for Docker draftee Cameron Sutcliffe who was a dominant midfielder and kicked two goals. Mark McGough worked very hard, Steven Dodd covered a lot of ground and Sean Henson again showed promise. Brennan Stack kicked three goals and was important in Perth's revival, Ross Young was dynamic, Leon Davis used the ball expertly and Cameron Manuel did some good things on debut.

East Fremantle 15.16 (106) Perth 13.9 (87)

At Claremont Oval the result was predictable with Claremont celebrating the return of ruckman Andrew Ruck with an easy win over South Fremantle. Kane Mitchell kicked three goals in another brilliant performance and David Crawford had his best game of the year. Ben Saunders kicked four goals and his efforts are sticking out like anything for the Bulldogs.

Claremont 17.17 (119) South Fremantle 10.4 (64).

The ladder: Swan Districts 40; Claremont 36; East Fremantle 36; East Perth 34; West Perth 26; Subiaco 24; South Fremantle 12; Perth 12; Peel 12.

Next week it's a top of the table meeting between Swan Districts and Claremont – Swans had one of those a fortnight ago. East Perth will jump at least one spot on the ladder if they can beat Peel at home because East Fremantle have a bye.
