Fremantle vs Essendon...

SOME traditions just don't last.

The Dockers appeared before their home fans for the first time on 11 February 1995 in a scratch match against Essendon at East Fremantle Oval – the AFL's new team won by 50 points.

By winning Fremantle gained the Albert Thurgood Challenge trophy. Thurgood was a champion of Essendon who came to Fremantle in 1895 and set new standards in goal kicking. He kicked 50 goals for Fremantle in his first season… before that the record for a season in the then WAFA was 10.

The handsome trophy was a miniature replica of a cannon from the Endeavour and the idea was that all games between the Dockers and Bombers would be preceded by the firing of a cannon. It lasted for a little while usually giving unsuspecting fans and pigeons an awful fright. The score from the game was to be inscribed on the cannon and the winning team would retain it.

Essendon veteran Mark Harvey, Fremantle vice-captain Scott Watters and former West Perth player Darren Bewick were pictured with the trophy at East Fremantle Oval. Do any readers know what became of them?
